Hello there. New to the forum, but long-time Inkscape user (although a long, long way from an expert user. I am no way using it to it's full potential, but just learn something new every time I need to do something specific). I am also far from a computer expert (although, again, I try to teach myself as needed), so please try and respond in basic terms in your replies! Thank you!!
With the exception of a corrupted preferences file a couple of weeks ago, Inkscape has been working fine for me. Version 92.3 on a Windows 10 laptop. It was all OK when I closed down 2 days ago, and closed down normally, then when I tried to open it up yesterday, I got the error message "Inkscape encountered an internal error and will close now." I have tried a complete re-install - including deleting preferences (to version 92.5 using the .exe installer), but the same thing happens.
In between closing down on Wednesday and opening on Thursday, no changes have been made to my computer (and I haven't installed a new font since July)
Has anybody got any ideas as to what I should try? (and, as mentioned above, I am far from an expert, so a bit of teaching your grandmother to suck eggs would be appreciated. Thanks so much.)
Well, something changed. There may have been an overnight update or scan that corrupted user data.
I would save the Inkscape user files (roaming directory) to a flash drive, then un-install Inkscape and delete the entire original Inkscape roaming directory.
Then I would re-install Inkscape using the .msi installer, and see if it works. (open files and close a couple of times to check)
If there are user-installed extensions, templates, symbols, etc. that I want to have back:
If Inkscape works, I would rename the new user-extensions folder (e.g. extensions to extensionsFOO) and copy back the saved flash-drive folder (e.g. extensions) to the roaming directory, and see if Inkscape still works.
If Inkscape still works, repeat for each folder saved on the flash drive, until Inkscape stops working, and chime back
