I am plotting an irrigation map of my property. I create a Grouped object to represent the sprinkler heads. Being a novice it's taking a little (much) trial and error. The object looked fine in my work file, but when I'd copied and plotted many of them on my drawing, I discovered that the Fill color Opacity was not at 100%. (I'd used that setting for something else in my drawing.)
So, back to the other drawing board. But wait, I found a feature (via searching this forum) to Select Same on the objects. Worked great (I was able to select just the filled shape, within the grouped object) until I tried to change the Opacity to 100%. The Fill and Stroke panel says the Opacity is already 100%. I could lower it, but not increase it and I can change the color. Hmm, what's up, I asked.
What I found is that, in the grouped object, if I select just the shape with the fill, the Opacity in the panel says it's 100%, but clearly on the drawing that is incorrect. So I did an ungroup on the object, and NOW the Opacity is displayed as 85%. (Opacity/Fill doesn't seem to be available to the whole grouped object.)
Is this the expected behavior? Is there a way to change the fill Opacity without ungrouping all 40 of the objects? It seems I'd have to do it individually because I'd have no way to regroup them in mass as separate objects. (I've been wrong about things like this before.)
When you select a group and set opacity, fill and stroke color (alpha), changes applies to all objects within the group.
Your problem is to change fill colors of just some objects within many groups, I guess.
As you did, you can select one object, do right clic > select same to have all the desired objects, then you could :
- there was in older versions a menu entry (second entry of the menu object >) allowing to do personal selections. I can't find it now. Perhaps "CSS and selector (Ctrl+shift + Q)" you can "save" this selection (I'm not very familiar with this panel).
- use swatches : this allows to set fill color to many objects, then only change the color settings of this swatch (sometimes it's tricky to use swatches).
Thank you, both, for the suggestions. They gave me more characteristics to play with. I haven't figured it out completely but I discovered that my Grouped objects has parameters that weren't what I expected. And when I started up Inkscape this morning It looked the same as last night but something seems different. Turns out when I first Grouped the objects, the Fill color was 100%. I could be wrong but I thought, for sure, the Group Opacity was 100% also. But now the Opacity of the group object is showing as 85%. I've included two screenshots of the object that should show what I mean.
In View 1, this is how the object looks on my drawing. The center area is a full circle and white with reduced opacity. There is a black arc on the outside of the circle. In View 2, I selected the center circle and Lowered the object one step. Now you see the true shape of the black area. I had intended the black area to be a path that only is the black arc seen in View 1 but I created a half-circle instead. In View 3, this is the result I wanted. The lower Path (irrigation pipe) is hidden under the sprinkler.
Although I couldn't do it last night, today I can adjust the opacity of the Group Object to be 100% which makes it cover the underlying path, which is what I was intending.
And I think I'll start back at the other drawing board and build the object again, maybe this time get it right. 😅

Maybe this is a beyond Basics, I'm not sure.
Thanks for any guidance you can provide.

Maybe this:
(Ctrl+Click to select objects within groups.)
