Using Inkscape with Other Programs IMPORT PNG AND COVERT TO VECTOR IN DXF

    Hello all,

I truly am hoping I am not duplicating the issue...

I'm trying to convert a .png file (a company logo) to a .dxf fille which will be readible and editable in easycad for laser. Now i have managed to convert the png using vectorise bitmap tool BUT when importing to easycad I cannot edit it and it only shows outlines. Now I have been told that after changing it to vector I also need to manually draw all the outlines as otherwise easycad will not be able to edit the fille as the lines are not connected properly. I have tried outlining the logo manually using the pen tool - that also did not work.

It worked once my frind did the same thing in autocad - what am I doing wrong?

Dxf files will only show the geometry... there are no fills or strokes in cad, generally speaking.

Please share some examples and screenshots. The paperclip button below the textarea can attach files.

Thanks Tyler. (Good movie btw). Well let me rephrase the question in that case: how would you approach converting a .png logo to a dxf file in Inkscape so it is editable in easycad2? I cannot sadly provide any screenshots from easycad as it's on an old machine running Windows XP ;)

I was watchin my colleague doing it manually in autocad - he was literally going around the logo and filling it with straight lines after which it was editable in easycad2... As stated before it was explained to me that after an auto conversion from png to vector file the lines have gaps that prevent easycad to edit the file (ie fill the logo in).

    Hello Guys,

Just bumping it up - any help will be appreciated :)

    Any imagery available?

I'm not quite sure of what imagery can be helpful here? A screenshot from Inkscape?

So below I am showing you the option I used to vectorise the png file and the result after removing the fill and thickening the contour. When I save this as dxf and upload to easycad it only shows very thin contours and doesn't let me use the fill option for laser.

Have you tried uploading only with fill color/no stroke already? If yes and it´s still showing just hairlines it can´t handle color filled shapes as Tyler already mentioned. I can´t test because EasyCAD is Windows only.

So the short answer is I cannot do it in Inkscape correct?

Could be you need to fill the shape with "hatches" which Inkscape can do.

Logos as simple as the example are no problem for Inkscape.

Providing more details about the desired outcome will be helpful.  e.g. "I'd like to engrave the filled areas", or "I'm trying to cut the outlines of each shape", etc.

@Polygon could you please explain a little bit more? How to do this?

When you converted the PNG to a vector format using the "Vectorize Bitmap" tool, it likely converted the image into outlines or paths. However, for the file to be properly editable in EasyCAD, the lines need to be connected to form closed shapes.

Manually outlining the logo using the pen tool should have worked, but since you mentioned it didn't, there might be an issue with the way you're creating the outlines. Make sure that the lines are joined properly to form continuous closed shapes. If there are any gaps or open ends, EasyCAD may not recognize them as editable objects.

Autodesk AutoCAD, being a professional CAD software, may have more advanced tools for automatically detecting and closing gaps in vector files, which could explain why your friend had success with it.

To troubleshoot the issue, you can try the following:

    1. Double-check your manual outlining process: Make sure you are accurately closing all shapes and connecting all the lines. Zoom in closely to ensure there are no gaps or open ends.

    2. Try different vectorization tools: If the "Vectorize Bitmap" tool you used didn't give satisfactory results, you can try other software or online tools specifically designed for converting raster images to vector format. Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW, or Inkscape are some popular options that offer vectorization capabilities.

    3. Use a dedicated DXF conversion tool: Instead of relying on the built-in "Vectorize Bitmap" tool, you can use a specialized downloader tool that directly converts PNG to DXF or into pdf. There are various software options available online, both free and paid, that can handle this conversion more accurately.

    4. Seek assistance from EasyCAD support: If you're still facing difficulties, it's a good idea to reach out to the EasyCAD support team. They can provide specific guidance or recommend compatible workflows for converting and editing the PNG file in their software.

Remember, the key is to have closed shapes or connect

@charli55 Now that is a proper answer and explanations - thank you very much!! I will give it a go and double check everything espcially the outlining after vectorisation. Have a great day bud!
