New InkSkape (1.0beta, 64bit) is terribly slow, it is impossible to work. Much slower than when he worked with X11 (XQuartz). Give me back my old InkScape!
EdnaBrockman, I answered you message above (your message #4 which I answered in #5). We need you to clarify what the problem is that you're having with 1.0 beta. Perhaps it could be fixed before 1.0 is released as a stable version? Or perhaps there's a misunderstanding how to use it? To repeat my specific questions:
Could you give us some more info, please? What is your operating system? Please tell us exactly which file you downloaded, and from where. What does "doesn't work" mean? Are you having trouble installing it? Or is it installed but something doesn't work? Specifically what doesn't work?
I don't think bitl was answering your question. I think he or she was....more or less complaining. But if we could get more details, we might be able to help.
bitl, if you could give us some details about your problem, likewise, perhaps it can be fixed. For example, what are you doing when you notice it's slow. Slowness is often a sign that the file is too large, or the object you're working on is too large. But that's not always the reason. It could be something else. And we aren't psychic, we need some clues.
brynn, just try Inkscape 1.0 under Mac OS X Catalina and you’ll understand. I don’t even know what details I can tell you ... The program has become slow and buggy, interface slow itself, rendering, even the color picker is slow.
@bitl You can install the old version of inkscape any time, we have a full record of the inkscape releases available on the website.
BUT, these releases are guarenteed not to work on MacOSX Catalina, and this problem is Apple's. So you'll need to use an older version of Mac until Inkscape 1.1 or later.
Going forwards, the developers and Mac developers are working hard to increase speed. Don't forget this is the first Inkscape on Gtk3, on 64bit and many other changes. So speedups are likely to follow once users help out reporting issues.
For those who don't know (clearly there are some who don't), beta software is for TESTING.
Beta software should be used on a computer dedicated solely for testing. If you run beta software on a computer you need daily, you run the risk of self-inflicted heartache.
Every personal computer user must exercise due-diligence beforeupgrading their operating system to assess if their software will be compatible with the OS upgrade. If you upgrade your OS and your programs become broken, that is your responsibility.
Beta2 means it's one more step closer to being released as the new stable version. But it's still beta, and still considered experimental. Anyone who has the right skills for testing is welcome to install it and give it a test drive.
EdnaBrockman is there some reason why you can't use the current stable version (0.92.4) ?
How do you install InkScape 1.0 beta 2 on linux? I see a Flatpak with no download link. Not even sure what that is. And AppImage, which I can download, but system doesn't recognize.
Suggstion: Use a bundle format common linux can understand out-of-the-box. Like tar.gz, .rpm, etc. Why the byzantine bundlers? Make it easy and people will use it.
EdnaBrockman Oh, I see. I'm sure the Mac developers are working hard. From what I've heard, they have some hurdles. But I've also heard that they are getting close.
I wish I had another choice to offer you. I don't know why, but apparently zip files are only for Windows. I think I will really miss them when I switch to Linux soon. But I surely don't understand why there's not a comparable format for Mac and Linux.
DarrenG I'm sure they will have the regular packages when 1.0 is released as stable. But for beta, users need to install either the flatpak or the app imag thing. I'm not a Linux user, so I can't elaborate.
Aren't there instructions? I thought there were instructions.... Yeah, start here: https://inkscape.org/release/1.0beta2/gnulinux/ When you click on either format type, the next page has instructions. Just scroll down to see them.
We recommend to Mac users who upgraded to Catalina to install the current beta, or even the development version that contains many fixes compared to that (currently the better choice).
The recent meeting discussing the release did not produce a fixed time frame. We need more people to look after bugs and help prioritise fixes for the release.
The mouse wheel should not change options values when scrolling.
For example I am in the export to png tab. I have all my options set up (like bit depth, compression, ...). When I want to scroll to the top of the export png tab and I am over an option it changes the option value! I just wanted to go up the export to png window not change the option value.
Do you think this can be changed?
PS: thank you for making Inkscape, it is wonderful.
Hello..I am presently experiencing such usability issues, however, they are not exactly glitches and I am just hoping for solutions.
1. Unable to disable rotation of canvas, even in Keyboard Shortcuts. I am very used to using Ctrl Zoom while using the Shift Key to move objects along a set line and the Ctrl-Shift Zoom combo is constantly now being inadvertently activated, causing my canvas to rotate unnecessarily. I am unable to disable this in Keyboard Shortcuts.
2. The gaps between icons in the native GTK UI is too large, and the Win32's UI is currently unusable due to incorrect icon scaling. Would it be able to reduce the gaps between icons in the default GTK UI?
3. The Fill and Stroke sidebar is too large, when compared to the previous UI, and with unnecessary large gaps between icons and menus as well. Can we reduce the size of the sidebar here too?
I would just like to express my gratitude to those who have worked so very hard on Inkscape 1.0. I have been using Inkscape since 2011 and it's by far a superior product to Illustrator in terms of ease of use and reliability. Thank you.
Hi Friends,
Development of the long awaited Inkscape 1.0 is moving right along. The beta version of 1.0 is now available for testing.
Please see this article for details: https://inkscape.org/news/2019/09/08/inkscape-10-beta1-available-testing/
Hi,
Will there be a 64 bit version for the Mac coming out soon?
with the new update to the Mac it will no longer support the 32 bit version.
thanks,
Bruce
I think there's a beta version already, for testing. Try https://inkscape.org/release/inkscape-1.0beta1/mac-os-x/1010-1015/dl/
I'm not sure if there's a release date for 1.0 yet?
But the About Screen contest is underway, so I won't be too long!
I really wish the new update for Inkscape get ready soon, the beta thing doesn't work for me, I'm not a computer person, please help
Welcome to the forum!
Could you give us some more info, please? What is your operating system? Please tell us exactly which file you downloaded, and from where.
What does "doesn't work" mean? Are you having trouble installing it? Or is it installed but something doesn't work? Specifically what doesn't work?
Meanwhile, is there some reason you can't use the current stable version 0.92.4 ?

what does that mean

@Martin Owens
> You can install the old version of inkscape any time
This is not true. What old version can I install on Catalina?
> and this problem is Apple's.
Realy? ;) I think Apple does not know about this. This is a problem for InkScape users.
> Don't forget this is the first Inkscape on Gtk3
I think gtk3 is shit. At least on the Mac OS X platform.
There is no such thing as InkScape.
Bump
Beta2 is out.

what is beta 2?

When is 1.0 expected to release as stable?

Mac Catalina users have a few options:
The above options may require the help of a pc techie, if you are not one yourself.
Have a nice day.

When is the estimated time inkscape 1.0 will be finished?
The recent meeting discussing the release did not produce a fixed time frame. We need more people to look after bugs and help prioritise fixes for the release.
In the rc1 I see a usability problem:

@mokalux Yes, I think it is possible to change that. Can you open a bug report for it at https://inkscape.org/report please?

@Seloloving Same comment for you: Please post bug reports and feature requests at https://inkscape.org/report - one item per report ;-)
