In the "topic list" within any given forum, it is common to list not just the name of the last person to post, but also the date that the last post was made. (Look at, for example, any forum inside http://www.inkscapeforum.com .)
I find having a date like that to be very helpful in understanding the context when looking at posts, and would suggest that it would be a nice improvement to these forums.
Unless I don't understand what you mean, there is a way to do this.
The use of the [img][ /img] tags.
In my humble opinion hotlinking is one of the basic uses of a forum -besides the attachments displaying. Although the attachment space is limited and probably is not intended to post reaction images. And to display results of random searches of the net. Which, with proper links lead to their source -sort of working as a thumbnail or preview to their content.
Then again, if someone scrolling through the page can decide much faster if they are interested or not.
Clicking to follow url-s to a specific site to display an image you are about to share here is a huge step back in functionality and organising information.
Can't even display images from the official gallery here.
I do understand the concerns of using bandwidth but it was their choice to put up a content to the public. Don't know of any image host that explicitely require no hotlinking either.
This forum doesn't use bbcode, or html, so those tags won't work. But as I said, there IS a way to show an image that is hosted somewhere else. Like if you host your image on imgur, you can show it in a message. See the message I linked above. (It is a clunky workflow, that's for sure. But I made sure that it is possible to do this, during development. I just had no say on how it was implemented.)
I think we have different definitions of "hotlinking". Using an image from an image host is fine, and I don't consider that hotlinking. To me, hotlinking is when you see an image on some website somewhere, and rather than go to the trouble to ask if you can use it, you just grab it's URL and re-use it. To me, that's like stealing someone else's resources.
Can't display images from the gallery here? I never tried it. Let's see....

I second the suggestion.
View count can be handy too. See if any topics have high traffic or languishing.
Suggestion time? Add a favicon to the site.
And ways to embed/hotlink images from outside url-s.
Dates exist when you hover over the calendar/clock icons.
A favicon is a task left to the adventurerous. ;-)
Unless I don't understand what you mean, there is a way to do this. It's explained in #3 here: https://inkscape.org/forums/questions/how-to-make-a-screenshot-and-put-it-in-a-message/#c2271
Although I tend to discourage hotlinking. It's not fair to the image host/website.
Favicon? I see a favicon....although the main website one is different from the forum one. Should probably be the same, but no big thing.
Today I saw the favicon for a short period of time but currently it shows the basic unset one.
Not sure if that's related to browser cache or if it was tinkered with.

I second the request. I'd love to have the relevant dates (created and last post) visible in the 'unread' list.

Weird! There must be some way to do it. But what I tried didn't work.
Edit
Maybe it's broken. Let me try from my server (while I still have it)
This must be a bug. When I use a URL from an image in my gallery, it gives an error of nothing found at that URL.
@doctormo ??
I'm using this url:
https://inkscape.org/~brynn/%E2%98%85export-png-quick-guide
The specific error is
"Nothing found! Searching yielded no results. Please try again!"
Hmm I see. Sorry for misunderstanding the instructions. So this is supposed to work. Testing.
If you type in the name "export-png-quick-guide" it should pop up.
Regarding dates, I've also requested them before among a few other suggestions for improvement of the thread list.
Seems we're a bit limited developer-resource-wise here (who could possibly have known... 😉); Martin: don't get hit by a bus!
Testing....
Wow! Another secret revealed. 😵 I'll add that to the instructions for showing images in messages.
Brynn, dont see your old avi, but a nice png guide shows.
