Do anyone work for a company in a graphic design/merchandising capacity? Does the CEO not allow you to modify your logo in any way just for the design that you're working on? My company uses a wordmark with a custom typeface, and I am not allow to modify it for any official merchandise or promotion. I'm talking about using a more basic type face so it works better in a circle. i can't make it an outline and insert an image into the letters. I can't put it behind an image so it looks like it is poking up from behind, but (in my eyes) still very legible. I'm not trying to change the logo for some official letterhead, or something else. I just want to make some cool merchandise for the people that work here. I want to include the company logo in some designs instead of having the logo be separate from a design. Is this common in company merchandise design standards?
If you work for them, I am sure they have their legal "parameters" on what you can and cannot do with their logos, equipment, ideas, your time while employed there, "non-compete" restrictions, etc. It is best to check with them directly, their HR and legal departments, your supervision, etc.
On the other hand, you may find a way to "paraphrase" your merchandise intentions. I do not think anyone can patent or copyright a phrase such as "best team ever" or something similar. Wby not run your ideas by your supervision and see if you can get them to sign off on it?

Most companies have tight restrictions on branding. They will usually have guidebooks on standards and practices for media and designers. For example:
Here is Adobe's for external (3rd party) use: https://www.adobe.com/content/dam/cc/en/legal/documents/Adobe_Trademark_Guidelines.pdf
For internal uses, they have a working group with their own sub-site: https://www.adobe.com/marketinghub.html
