So, I am pretty aware that full implementation of variable fonts isn't completely there yet, but I know some fonts worked properly, this one though looks pretty odd with its default presets.
I'm wondering if there's a way to get it to look properly as it does on the Google Fonts page...?
Seems like the controls are crossed up... manipulating the tool controls affects the Dialog display, but manipulating the dialog controls affects the canvas.

Just downloaded and tried the Roboto font. Over here it doesn't look distorted as yours does, but no variations except italic works.
@Lu9, system info/version, Inkscape version & installer (.msi, .dmg, etc) and any special configs (tablets, monitors, etc)?
Single monitor, no tablets - version 1.2.1 running on Windows 11 64bits, I believe I've used the exe installer.
I installed and have the same issues. Inkscape 1.2.1 (9c6d41e410, 2022-07-14) Win 8.1.
I'll give linux a try next.
