I have been using Inkscape occasionally for a couple of years to edit pdfs. Previously, the text I have added has always been smooth as expected. Suddenly this morning it is all jagged. 

Inkscape was installed on my windows machine a few days ago. The pdf was created in R, the usual source of the pdfs I edit.

Any idea what's wrong please.

I suspect you have a dashed stroke on the text - can you check the fill and stroke dialog (stroke style)?
