I am trying to draw a regular pentagon. All the sides the same length, and the base parallel to the horizontal axis.
No matter what I try, the base will not come out perfectly horizontal. And no matter what I try, I cannot be sure that it is when I'm trying to rotate it.
What am I missing? How can I compel it to behave itself?
Please check Preferences->Behavior->Steps and make sure "Rotation snaps every" is 360° dividable by the number of 5 (for 5 corners) like 18, 10, 6 for instance
I'm sorry, but I've only found the "snap every x degrees" useful when the blasted object is already aligned to the rectalinear grid (or a radial one). Otherwise it never goes exactly where I want it.
But the guides trick allows for aligning it. Thanks once again, Paddy_CAD!
On edit: Oh, sorry, I missed moving the center of rotation before turning.
Thanks!

Actually, I just tried the guide trick, and it's not working.
The pentagon rocks back and forth, only one vertex snapping to the guide at a time. I can't get it work. I suppose eventually it might settle on the line, but I doubt I'll be able to tell exactly when that happens.
And apparently I wasn't clear when I said the snapping to x degrees didn't work. I suppose I should've said that you have to know the degrees the thing is tilted in order to use it. And if I knew tht, I could just use the Transform > Rotate dialog to do align it properly.
I wish there was a section of the Align functions that allowed me to select a line segment and, without distorting the object at all, it would align it rotationally with another line (or guide) of my choice. But clearly I think differently than the programmers of Inkscape do.

Use [ctrl+click+drag] to snap the rotation angle as you draw your shape. Or take a look at this. https://inkscape.org/forums/questions/how-do-i-align-these-two-triangles-on-their-hypotenuse-and-in-the-bottom-in-general

I really can´t explain it any better, JUST LOUDER: ;-)
