I created a clip group by duplicating and combining all of the shapes bit by bit (to avoid crashing) as there where thousands of paths. Then I used a brush to paint over the image within the clip. I used blend modes to achieve the final look. While I personally prefer the black and white, this is a little more vibrant.

The most common tools used were the "Draw Freehand Lines" tool and ctrl+z.
