After googling, and searching inkscape.org's forums, I've not found an answer to this question; but it seems it would be a frequent question - probably worded differently. What I want to do is simply, when I have, for example, drawn a line and used the "fill and stroke" menu to set the line width and style (dashes, markers, etc.), to save this setting so that it can be reused later, so that I don't have to, each time I draw a line in a new drawing, set the same parameters all over again? If so, how does one do this?
Inkscape allows you to copy the style of one object to another. Select the source object and copy it [ctrl+c]. Select the target objects and [Edit > Paste... > Style] or [shift+ctrl+v].
You can also use [Object > CSS and Selectors...] to create a CSS class that styles the objects added that class. This is more complicated and I find it unstable. Inkscape sometimes crashes when I use this.

Thanks!

Those are great tips! Thanks very much.
You can also configure the line, object, text, etc. and by double clicking on the tool you are configuring, check Take from selection.
