Beyond the Basics Preview in Text tool not working for all fonts

I had issues with previewing text in version 1.2 not showing all fonts correctly, so I updated to 1.2.2 and it is even worse for me now.  Now many of the fonts only show a string of rectangles in the font list and in the preview window, see attachment.  This is on a Windows 11 machine.

Before proceeding further, I'd reset the preferences. https://inkscape.org/forums/questions/getting-back-to-square-one-and-starting-over-its-easy/

Thanks @TylerDurden.  I just gave that a try.  When I restarted Inkscape, some things were definitely different so I know the reset happened, but the behavior of my text tool is still the same.

    Maybe related to this https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape/-/issues/3583

@TylerDurden, I tried changing Language settings but saw no improvement.  Hopefully the bug report you linked will get resolved soon.

I uninstalled 1.2.2 and downloaded 1.3 development version.  The Text Tool seems to work fine there, so I will hold on to the hope that when 1.3 is released, my problem will go away.  FWIW, when I reinstalled 1.2.2 the problem came back.

I have tried resetting settings as well as manually setting the language to English, but the font preview for all my installed fonts is showing as all squares.

Using "Install for all users" to install the fonts appears to have fixed the issue for some of the fonts (the ones that aren't working are likely only installed for my current user). Inkscape should be able to render fonts installed for a user, but it's likely a bug related to running inkscape on windows (windows 11 22h2)

Old bug already fixed years ago (in 0.92.5).

I must have been looking at the wrong fonts to see if it fixed the issue after installing manually for all users

Not all the font bugs are fixed, and there can be regressions, but most things are working.

All of my fonts are installed for all users, so I don't think that is the issue on my system.
