Maybe everybody already knows about this and I'm the last to discover it, but here's a time-saving shortcut for all the keyboard warriors out there.
Grab the ellipse tool [e] and draw an ellipse, any size, any place. Now the magic. [alt+x] activates the first data entry field in the ellipse toolbar so you can enter the x-radius. [tab] and shift+tab] navigates to the other fields. [enter] ends the data input and returns focus to the canvas. This shortcut also applies to the Select, Rectangle and Spiral tools.
Full disclosure: In the distant past I mistakenly denied the existence of this shortcut. https://inkscape.org/forums/beyond/drawing-a-rectangle-to-an-typed-in-dimension
