Yesterday, I was playing with Inkscape 0.92 and I don't recall what I did last. But today, when I tried to draw a square, all I get is a dashed box with an x in the center and little squares and circles in the corners. How do I reset the square tool?

I can't give you an answer straight up. But a full screenshot might be a massive help for people trying to help you.
Isn't there a Reset button in the Inkscape-Preferences?
Try ... Edit / Preferences / System and look near the top.
At least that is how you do it in Inkscape 1.01
