I had an earlier version of Inkscape. When I wanted to install the latest version I was informed that I would first have to uninstall the older version. I did this and tried the installation. I got a message that there was an older version on my pc and I would need to uninstall it. As I had already done so I could no longer find the older version. However, the folder that the older version was installed to still existed. I deleted this folder and tried again, with the same result. I then tried rebooting my pc and tried once more. This also did not work and I am still getting the message to uninstall the older version. Now I do not know what steps to take next. Can anyone help?

You didn't mention about your OS. Let me consider its windows.
1. Once check in control panel Add/Remove programs whether Inkscape is present.
2.If present remove from there.
3. If not present there then once install the current version what you had. then once again uninstall it will be removed completely
