I have an object my artist gave me that they generated in AI. It's in color. It's going into a black and white print process so I need to change it. I brought it into Inkscape, applied the gray scale filter and lightened it a bit. Everything looks good on the screen.
But when I do a save as to PDF the grey scale filter is removed and the PDF is in color with the filter not applied. What am I doing wrong? I would rather not bother the artist to give me a 2nd version in black and white as I assume Inkscape should be able to do this.
Thanx Tyler. I think I'm not using the correct terminology. I had used Color>Greyscale but then the PDF was still color. My temporary work around is to generate a PNG, use GIMP to grey scale then re-import. But of course now I have a raster, which isn't ideal.
I stand corrected. I see now there is both Extensions / Color / Greyscale and Filters / Color Greyscale. Extensions changes what I see on the screen but not PDF. Extensions does nothing. Maybe it isn't compatible with 1.2?
It might also be this object. Normally I just change the color of the object myself, but in this case it's some sort of strange group overlay that I don't have the knowledge to deal with so I have to use it as a whole.
Try exporting the object at twice the size as a png file, with good resolution (300 dpi).
Then open it in Gimp and go to Colors > Desaturate > Desaturate. Under "Mode", there are five different grayscale modes: choose the one you like best and press OK. Then, go to Image > Mode and choose Grayscale: this will ensure that the image is in grayscale. Export as a png file, open in Inkscape and reduce the size by 50%.

I presume you mean "filters changes what I see on the screen, but not PDF".
The extension works here on 1.2.1. If the extension does nothing, maybe the artwork is composed of bitmaps. If that's the case, I'd ask the source for the vector version if it exists.
Bitmaps can be easily seen by View>split mode, or View>Display properties>Outline. Images will be red rectangles with diagonal lines.
@Guerreiro64's method is fine, if the SVG file only contains images. If there are vector objects, a vector solution is preferred.
Feel free to share the file here (or send me a DM)
Thanx Between you and the artist I got it figured out. The object was vectored, but the back ground colored texture that was behind the objects was raster with a mask over it. The fix was to ungroup the the combination, grey scale the background in GIMP, bring it back in, then grey scale the vector parts in GIMP. The split mode was very helpful.
Howdy

PFDs do not render filters, but the filtered objects can be rasterized (also not optimal).
I would not use the filter and use the extension Color>Greyscale instead.
Thanx Tyler.
