I had to uninstall and re-install Inkscape and for reasons that I ignore, it appeared in Spanish. I need to change it to English, How can I do this? Thanks
Hello. I have the same problem but it shows up in Hungarian. Unfortunately, there is no such thing in my Inkscape as a language in the preferences. I checked every option in the preferences. Any other way to change it?
I'm not sure, but perhaps you could change your VPN.I don't know where are you from, I am from Colombia and being near the US, I got it with both English and Spanish and other more popular languages. So uninstall the software including all hidden files using an uninstalling software called "Revouninstaller". it is free and if cleans up any files that sometimes software leaves hidden in your PC. Then change your VPN (You can use "Psyphon .com", also free and very good) and perhaps you will download the correct version of Inkscape for the country you live in. Although I cannot guarantee 100% it will work, you lose nothing giving it a try. Good luck! EDUARDO
I have no idea why a VPN should change the default Inkscape language of your system when downloading from the origin site. That's for sure some Windows mystery and spooky too.
For the reason that sometimes software are issued for different markets with different cultural versions including languages, It is similar to movie streaming services that they don't offer the same programming to all the countries in which the service is available.
It was in the edit - preferences- interface. I clicked on interface and I was looking for language in the dropdown, but I actually have to close that interface dropdown and have to go to the right to find it. I must say the preferences are not user friendly, but I still love the Inkscape. :) I'm looking forward to discover the new version and interface as soon as I can get the fill and stroke work.
I run into a similar problem when installing the beta version on my Mac (Mac runs on Catalina). The language seems to be English but there are lot of strange symbols everywhere. I added a screenshot to my problem. When I try to copy this strange looking text from inkscape (for example from the description) and paste it somewhere else, it magically transforms to English. No idea what went wrong. Probably someone knows the problem. Thanks a lot in advance.
For 1.2 goto Edit -> Preferences -> Interface and scroll up. My first visit to this page, the language selection was not visible. I had to scroll up to see it.
Hi there. This problem is still popping up with the version 1.2.2 (March 2023) on my Windows 11 machine (picture attached). Unfortunately, the Languages list in the Global Preferences does not help because I cannot read any of the listed languages!? Any advice?
I don't think this is any language, it looks like a bug. Try setting any language from the settings and then switch back to the language you prefer. You can use Google Lens to translate the language on screen if you can't guess them at all.
Below is how you can change the language, the position of the buttons should be in the same place even if the language is different.
The System default (top of the list in Inkscape), may change the display language based on Regional format (not Windows display language) in Windows 11.
Thanks to tukykarmakar and Aero for the suggestions. Alas, I spent several hours working through the Language options in the Interface menu and nothing worked (though I did cycle through lots of odd languages and sets of unrecognized unicode characters). I also checked all of my Windows 11 language settings and they were fine (set to English, United States).
What DID eventually fix the problem was uninstalling the latest Inkscape (v 1.2.2, the 2022-12-09 release) and reinstalling an older build (v 1.2, 2022-05-15 release). So there is something in the newer code that was vulnerable to a strange UI language glitch.
Maybe this observation will be helpful to the developers and other users as v 1.3 rolls out? I hope so! I love InkScape and have FINALLY started teaching my Graphic Design class exclusively in InkScape, without using any Illustrator!
You know what's weird? I chose the language to be English, but the interface was half English and half of my native language. Please, who's working with code, remove location trackers, it's so annoying when you choose one thing but it doesn't work how it supposed to. I want to be able to choose what language I want, not the one where I live!

What seems necessary these days especially after updating Inkscape is to Reset its Preferences.
PortableApp version of Inkscape may be worth a try:
