Work in Progress Creating a background

I have created an SVG file to cut veneer for Marquetry.  I built it by creating the individual parts, and have successfully cut them and temperarily taped them (see attached JPEG).  I am trying to get the image into a background layer - to cut the overall outline out of a piece of veneer that all the pieces will fit into.  I have tried grouping all the pieces in the SVG and boolean operations to get the SVG image subtracted from a plain (maybe filled) background - so the background becomes the frame.  Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

There is always a small gap between pieces, and if you just union all, you will have to deal with many small gaps with node tool. Furthermore, I guess that you need to preserve this small gap around the car for the wooden background. So I would :

    1. select all, do path>outset (the amount of outset can be set in global inkscape preferences : ctrl+shift + P then  behavior > steps).
    2. Then you can press ctrl + + to unite all paths.
    3. Draw a rectangle to the size you want the wooden background to be, then send it to bottom (end key),  select the two paths and do path> difference (ctrl + -) : et voilà !

This worked!.  I’m on a Mac, so it took a couple tries to figure out which keys worked, but I did get a separate background that I was able to move to LightBurn to drive my laser.  I’ll need to check the offsets, and look at the “outsets”, but I have something to work with.  I appreciate your input, and will post the finished marquetry panel.
