Inkscape allows only a few colour gradient distributions (linear, radial, reflected) which are useful for fills but generally disappointing for painting strokes. The mesh gradient can be adapted but it's cumbersome and leaves me envious of applications where the gradient can be traced along an arbitrary path. This tutorial simulates that functionality by subdividing curved path into nearly linear subpaths and colouring each end node to match the next start node. I'm quite pleased with the result.
