If the two unioned objects did not share any area, you can do path > split path. If they did, Union process removed some path information.
If.you're not sure, you can use combine instead of.union ( you may have to modify fill rule to evenodd in fill and stroke panel, tab fiom, heart shaped icon to the right) or use the boolean live path effect : this.can be modified.interactively.
