Is there a way to align nodes vertically / horizontally to other nodes as you are drawing? In other programs as you move your mouse to add a node an alignment line will show when vertically / horizontally across from other nodes.
There's a work-around. Drag a set of guides to intersect the the reference node. You can use only a single one if you need just that one reference direction. While creating the other node, it will snap to the reference guide, or at the very least, pop up a reference balloon.

Soon, but not yet. This very feature will be included in the upcoming Inkscape v1.2 and you can experiment with a pre-release version right now.
