I can get it to trace bitmaps but the finished trace is one big vector and can not be ungrouped for individual item editing. I want to be able to edit the drawing items and nodes after creating the trace.
Open Object->Layers and Objects to check what you have selected as well as the StatusBar at the bottom of the Inkscape window. I´m pretty sure it´s there ready to be worked on with the Node tool. If it still refused to work please upload an example file.

What were your steps and are you autoracing for Multicolor scans?
just imported the B/W bitmap, chose single scan trace bitmap. It seemed to trace the bitmap just fine, but I can't edit vector. (It has no nodes)
