Beginners' Questions Dimensions and measure path

I drew up a diagram and wanted to add the measurements to the object to have a reference for when I print it. I choose a side of it, go to dimensions and apply them. That brings up lines with arrows on them. Then I open "measure path", click on the arrowed line, then click apply and it gives me the measurements in the chosen unit ( I'm using in). This works find, accept for two of the sides. I have a side that is 0.25 in and this caused the arrow to look smashed together and the only way I can see the unit numbers are if I stretch the arrow line out, which then is no longer aligned with the side of what I am measuring. Is there a way to have the arrows show smaller and the numbered units not resize with the arrows? Because if I resize the arrows to see the unit numbers, the move the numbers, then resize the arrows, the unit numbers resize back to being not seeable. There is probably a simple solution to this, but I'm not able to see it. Thank you for helping me out.

It is common to indicate dimensions with a leader, if there isn't enough room.

Thank you for that. Could you explain how to add that? I looked it up, but the few things I read just told me to create a line, then add an arrow to it.

After using Dimensions and Measure Path: I ungroup, move the small line with arrows down, duplicate it, move the duplicate up and remove the extra arrowheads using the Fill/Stroke dialog.
