Using Inkscape with Cutters/Plotters problems Inkscape/Lightburn

    Hi,

I have a problem with lasercutting an Inkscape-file and i'm running out of solutions i can think of myself so i would like to use your expertise. I don't have my own lasercutter but the guy who cuts my designs uses Lightburn-software (I don't know which lasercutter he uses or if that is important?).

The blue lines and the black parts that need to be engraved don't get their proper place when cut, see the uploaded photo's and SVG-file. Can someone please tell me if there is anything I am doing wrong in my design?

    Many thanks in advance.

    Greetings,

    Marco

The person making the cuts and engraving may have a mechanical problem with his machine. A loose setscrew on a pulley will cause shifting as shown in the photo. Engraving causes the nozzle to rapidly reverse directions and can create sufficient force on a loose screw to cause the shift you're seeing. Cutting is a more "gradual" movement, although some parts of the design would generate similar forces.

I use both Lightburn and Inkscape and have no problems with layer separation causing such problems.

    Hi Fred,

Thanks for your response. The person who is doing the cutting for me also works for others and he tells me he has never encountered this problem before with other files. I am hoping someone can give me some commend whether or not there is a problem with the nodes or the combining of paths in my design.

can you attach the inkscape file for perusal? I can import it to LB and see if anything pops up on my end.

    Hi Fred,

Sorry for the late reaction, but it's been kinda busy last week. I attached the inkscape-file although i have to admit í only now discovered that my svg-files where displayed as html-files. So i've also been sending the guy who does my lasercutting an html-file

I corrected this on my computer but could this be the cause for the problems i've been encountering?

    Thans again!

I right clicked on your attachment, saved it and opened it in Inkscape. It looks great. I was surprised to see all the colors on one layer, but figured that was no big deal. It was a big deal on the positive side when importing it with LightBurn put the different colors on separate layers. That's a feature of LightBurn I've not used before and it was a pleasant surprise.

The import was just fine with respect to alignment on the screen. If the preview of your laser contact shows a distorted image, the problem may be the html/svg confusion. If the preview in LightBurn shows normal, it's still a mechanical problem with the laser.

It's important that the recipient save the files with a right click and save rather than opening the image and saving it. This is because the browser is usually the default for displaying SVG files. Once opened, nothing useful to the laser is preserved in the architecture of the file. Using right-click and save keeps all the bits and bytes where they belong.

That's an entertaining image. If you created it, kudos to you for your artistic skill and imagination.

    Hi Fred,

Thanks a lot for checking it in Lightburn. I used to have a free trial-version of Lightburn myself some time ago and when i imported another file in Lightburn the preview did show normal but the blue lines and the parts that needed to be engraved where misaligned when i had it lasered so i will check my laser contact once again for any mechanical problems on his machine.

Thanks again, also for your kudos for the image!

    Greetings,

    Marco
