What looks better when centering two things? i have attached an image with shows text over a design. the text isn't as wide as the design. should i center the text based on the weight of the design (the left side) and not care that the oar is sticking further out than anything on the left side? or should i center the text considering the whole of the design which will shift the weight of the design more left. this is probably more of a preference thing but i was wondering if there were any rules/guidlines i could follow.
I use the Inkscape 1.2 master builds and i used the lattice deformation to get the curved effect. It's not perfect, but I've been ok with it so far. I'll have to look into that bezier envelope effect, cause those look pretty good! thank you for the heads up.

Sometimes "If it looks good, it is good." is the most appropriate path. This is why there are kerning tools, variable line spacing, etc.
Similarly, it is common to have framed objects slightly higher than vertical center, as we tend to perceive true centering as low.
Aesthetics are in the eye of the beholder (or the fussy design professor).
FWIW, I prefer the one on the left.
Not sure why the "N" is so prominent. This is via Bézier-Envelope: just a random font but more equally spaced I find.
While we´re here I might add my 2¢ here:
