I think that Posturising an image may well give better edges for the BitMap tracing to produce profiles I can use.
At Filters > Image Paint and Draw there is the choice (at the bottom) of Posterise Basic. I have tried this and I am reasonably sure that with some practice it will definitely help.
However, I was wondering about the description Basic. Does this infer, for example are there posterising tools in other applications that may work better - I could then use the 'better' psoterised image in Inkscape?

You need to Edit->Make a Bitmap Copy because the autotracer will ignore filters and autotrace this bitmap instead then.
