Is it possible to zoom into the mouse, eg. such that by pressing + Inkscape zooms into the position where the mouse is pointing at?
Inkscape usually zooms in using the mouse wheel or zoom tool.
Try holding the Ctrl key and zooming with the mouse scroll wheel.
