Is there a way to get the X/Y coordinates boxes to show the center of a selected object, instead of the upper left corner?
Also, is there a way to precisely position guides?Β By typing in coordinates?
Im also having problems getting everything to display inches , instead of Picas. I switched on every option I could find, but there are still places that show picas;Β the export page for example.
1. a second click on an object will display the (rotational) center.
2. double-click a guides to open the Guideline panel for more options.
3. units are document based and can be altered in the Document Properties. If you want a default page with your units save it as a new "default" Template at File->Save Templateβ¦: enable "Set as default template".
If you double-click with the selector tool on an object, it displays the center of rotation: the little cross (which by default is the center of the bounding box). If you then click on the center of rotation, two faint lines (vertical and horizontal) appear from the center of rotation, indicating that this is now the reference point for x/y coordinates.
This also works for resize arrows (simply click once on the object, then on a resize arrow).
The great thing about the center of rotation is that you can drag and drop it anywhere you like, so that you can actually choose any reference point (if you need to reset rotation center to its default position, shift-click on it).
I did set the units in the doc set-up to inches, nd I think there were one or two more places where I selected inches over the other option. Almost everything displayed in inches, but there were still a few places that displayed picas, like the export page.
I understand how to bring up the rotation on an object. You find that pretty quickly, even when you are just learning. When I get an object to display the rotation options, the X/Y coordinates still show the upper left position.Β I want it to display the center coordinates of a selected object. I came from Adobe In Design, and in that software you can select what area of an object is displayed in the X/Y. Scribus too.Β
I guess thats why I'm trying to figure it out on Inkscape.Β Really, the buttons to center an object are pretty convenient. I want to learn how to precisely position objects, as opposed to just winging it.
When I get an object to display the rotation options, the X/Y coordinates still show the upper left position.
You forgot to click once again on rotation center crossπ. Read my post again πand look for the two faint lines that appear once you click on rotation center and see the changings in the X and Y fields

I'll just explain point 1 a little further:

For clarity, the transform handles are changed by a slow second click. A fast double-click will activate the edit (node/ellipse/rectangle/etc) tools.
You're absolutely right !

Same principle with resize handles :
