Beginners' Questions Using Path > Difference to punch a shape from a polygon but it's not working

I'm familiar with using the operators for Union, Difference, Division etc but am currently having a problem with the Difference function. I imported an image of a cobra's head and then used Path > Trace Bitmap to make a vector image of it. I then have a pretty simple polygon shape that I want to "punch" the image of the cobra's head out of. However whenever I try this, the cobra image just disappears and nothing happens to the polygon shape underneath.

I tried again but with just overlaying the polygon with a basic square and this cuts out the shape as you would expect. So it must have something to do with the traced cobra head. It appears to be all one object, although it isn't continuous as there are parts that are seperate from the main part (although still part of the same object if you move it around). And the parts aren't grouped - trying to ungroup them doesn't do anything.

td,dr: I'm trying to cut a shape out of another shape using Path > Different but it's not working.

    😜

Haha got it! So the red shape has quite a large stroke assigned to it....when the difference was created, the stroke is so large it just "fills in" the hole. Obvious now.... :D :D :D
