Ok - there went something wrong in the beginning when you did Path->Stroke to Path instead of "Object to Path" and I guess it´s easier to start over with the "B"ézier-tool than:
Take the Node-tool and select either 1 single node from the white or the black shape - then go Edit->Select All and hit Backspace to delete one shape.

I'm very new to Inkscape so your patience please.

When I draw a simple box and add and use nodes it leaves the background black. How do I stop this so it leaves just the outline of the new shape
I don´t understand a word. Can you give a step-by-step process about what you´re doing?
