If you used Inkscape's Path menu > Trace Bitmap, that means you have converted a raster ("bitmap") image to vector (paths).ย So you no longer have a raster image.ย Now you have a vector image.
Depending on what options you used for tracing, the results might be Grouped.ย So the first thing to try is
select it
Object menu > Ungroup
deselect everything
Now you should be able to select individual parts.
If that doesn't work, then maybe you have a compound path (one path made of more than one sub-path).ย If that's the case, the only way to edit is using the Node tool.
If neither one of those things allows you to edit in the way that you want, please share the SVG file with us, and explain what you want to do.
Dear all, I am really enjoying the trace feature. I would like to export the trace items I've created into my drawing program, and from there into a book which I hope to sell commercially... Is this allowed? Thank you everyone for any help with this enquiry. Best wishes, Kateย
Dear Tyler, ah thank you! I create all the images they're the alphabet I've drawn myself. I'm using the traces to "write" my script over the top of the artwork. Have a great day! Catherineย
Dear all, I have created my wonderful Portrace Bitmap! But can I now use and manipulate that bitmap in Inkscape?
Welcome to the forum!

How kind of you to come back so quickly with help and information. I will have a play around. Have a great evening. Cheers, Kateย

If you traced images you own or licensed for commercial re-use, there should be no problem.
If you traced copyrighted works and didn't get permission or a license to re-use commercially, you may get in trouble.
This is not an Inkscape specific issue, but it applies generally to most artwork.
