Beginners' Questions Union Not Working

I'm a very new user to Inkscape and I'm having some challenges getting the Union function to work.

Let me preface by saying that I _think_ it's the Union function I want. I'm trying to merge multiple objects and have the overlapping lines go away similar to what was discussed on this thread yesterday: https://inkscape.org/forums/questions/erasing-line-when-joining-two-shapes/

    1. I have my shapes created in separate files
    2. I paste one shape onto the workspace with the other
    3. I use Align to get the bottom edges to line up and then shift one of the objects so they overlap how I want them
    4. I select both objects and Select Union
    5. ...and nothing happens.

I'm using Inkscape 1.01, updated today.

Both objects have no Fill but have a Stroke set.

I'm certain that it's something very simple that I'm missing but I cannot figure out what it might be. To add to my frustration, I got it to work earlier today, twice but then tried to add a fourth object to the mix everything began failing and I haven't been able to get it to work since then. I'm loading one of the two files, the other one contains a vulgarity that I don't want to post. This one file does represent earlier success though as I was able to merge two circles using the Exclusion command and the four numbers added to them with the Union command.

    Any advice is appreciated!

Aside from that your graphic is not on the canvas itΒ΄s a "one-piece" already. Not sure what you expect more or other than this.

Right, I only uploaded one of the two graphics because the other one is a giant swear word. I was hoping that if there was something file-specific that was wrong that it would be on both of them.

Often, the status bar at the bottom will give hints when an operation fails... e.g. "One object is not a path" and similar.

If you want to send the other bits privately, DM me for an email addy.

    Thanks, @TylerDurden !

Looking at the status bar, one of the objects was still a Group from the previous action. I used the Ungroup command and can now use Union.

Sorry for such a beginner question, I appreciate the help!
