Win10, Inkscape 1.1 msi, dual monitors, problem observed on two different machines, have only used Inkscape for a few months.
I have drawn a floor plan with all the walls using a combination of straight lines and rectangles. (Mostly lines). I am now trying to cut all the door openings.
What I am doing/observing: I draw a rectangle or a line over where I want to cut a door into a wall. Clip/Set always erases the whole wall leaving the "doorway" rect/line. (I assume this is a z-order thing.) Clip/Set Inverse (LPE) erases the wall section as desired, but almost always causes a prior cut to disappear and show the wall again.
Using Object to Path or Stroke to Path on a 'wall' crashes Inkscape.
Assuming I am not doing something wrong, it appears that a line or object may only have a single cut applied to it. Is this correct? If not, any ideas on what is happening?
Screen Captures:
1. Before.PNG - shows an existing wall with a single doorway cut into it. (Walls are yellow.)
2. Setting Up For Another Clip.PNG - shows getting ready to cut another doorway. I'm using a rectangle for this cut.
3. After Clip.PNG - shows the new doorway cut, but the other doorway has now disappeared. I used the "Clip/Set Inverse (LPE)" which could be the problem, but IDK.
Isn't a straight line drawn with the bezier a single thick stroke? Most of them were done that way and what the screen captures were operated upon. Drew a straight line and then adjusted the thickness.
Clipping was the obvious choice for me with my limited knowledge of inkscape. My other thought was to put two nodes in place for the doorway and then delete the part of the line between them. But I couldn't figure out how to get additional nodes added to the line. So I'm here looking to see if what I was doing is broken or just not allowed/normal. And what my options are at this point.
Drawing straight lines is an option in the tool. Or hold down ctrl: Click point click - enter to finish - Click point click - Enter to finish. Or double-click on line to introduce new points - then select 2 points and click on: "Delete segment between 2 non-endpoints".
@Lazur This is vector art for a book and not "real" floorplans. I already had a bitmap drawing of the layout so I traced over that to get to where I am. At the time it seemed easiest to draw all the walls to keep everything straight/parallel as needed and then cut out the doorways. I did look at some cad systems, but that was going to be yet another learning curve or expense.
Based on @Polygon visual, looks like one option is to 'mark' all the parts of the full wall line that I want to keep and then do the clip/set. Which is the opposite of how I was thinking. I'll tinker with that and the grouping method.
@Polygon Yeah, I was using snap to guides so tracing over the image was pretty easy. After watching your little video, I finally figured out how to add new nodes to a line (I was missing the double-click to cause the insertion of the new node), and then I could delete the segment between them. So, I think that gets going again although I may revert back to .92 as this 1.1 regularly crashes. Thanks!

DonΒ΄t know what "powerclip" is but I guess you can "combine" the two clip elements before clipping - clipping paths can still be edited.
Why you donΒ΄t use single thick strokes for the wall escapes me.

Essentially yes, so why clipping?

Hi.
You can perform multiple clippings if you group the object in question first and clip the group (Ctrl+G).
So for two "nested"clipping it would be a clipped group containing a clipped group/clipped object/clippedpng etc.
Personally speaking drawing floorplans with inkscape is a pain in the back. Would suggest seeking an alternative cad software if possible.
Here clipping means the path exists just inside the clipping area. DonΒ΄t makes sense for me while drawing floor-plans.

You can enable some guides - and snapping to guides or grids to maintain straight lines easily:

The boolean operation Cut Path comes in mighty handy for this sort of work.
