When you enable the Text tool, you have to click on the canvas, and also make sure you see the cursor flashing there, before Inkscape has the right focus to recognize the keystroke as text. (It usually takes me 2 clicks to see the cursor flashing (not a double-click, but 2 slow clicks).) If you don't have the proper focus, which is apparently what's happening, Inkscape will think you're asking for a keyboard shortcut.
I always have the opposite problem. When I'm finished typing text, and I want to switch back to the Selection tool, I think well, I'm already on the keyboard, so I'll just press S and get the Selection tool. But no, it types an S every time! One of these days I'll finally learn, haha!
This is a known issue, and I think it's already fixed. Can you please let us know which version of Inkscape (Help > About, copy the full version info) and which operating system / version you are using?
I am using Inkscape 0.92.4 (5da689c313, 2019-01-14) with Win7 64 pro. I have since discovered that the problem only exists if I use the +/- symbols of the numbers keypad. If I use the standard +/- keys all seems to be OK.

if I try to create a text block containing the character + the programm performs the zoom function instead of creating a text block.
I have tried to alter the soft-key settings with no success. I find this very frustrating, what am I doing wrong?

Maybe the NumLock key can help?
