Hi folks,

I'm new to Inkscape. When I started using it (yesterday), I had no trouble adding text. Now all of a sudden, the text tool isn't working.

Here's what I'm doing:

1. Create a new layer for text.
2. Click the text tool icon ("Create and edit text objects") -- I've also tried using the T shortcut.
3. Click on the workspace. (This is where the problem is; I don't get the cursor)
4. When I start typing, instead of text, another tool gets selected.

My file is attached. What am I doing wrong?

Are you probably trying to operate on the invisible "Text" layer? Either make it visible again or choose another layer to work on. Hopefully that was it. Still not 100% sure.

That isn't it. The layer was visible. The problem was that I never got the cursor when I clicked on the text tool icon.

When I opened your file the top layer is  selected/active and invisible; You will not get the text cursor when you´re on an invisible layer:

Hi, I have just started learning about Inkscape, and have been going through the tools. When I first used the text tool, it was ok. I mean when I wanted to write anything I created a box. That box was patterned black. But now, when I create a box, it is like blue solid stroke, and when I try to write anything it goes almost out of that box. It creates a different box for the text, and I can't use the functions like before. It is actually hard to describe as I am new here. I am attaching a screenshot, hope it will help. If anyone can help me, I would be grateful. Thanks.

Instead of sending you all over the place to check settings for Fill+Stroke and text relevant properties please go to Inkscape's Preferences->System, hit the "Reset Preferences" button and restart Inkscape. Let's see if this will work.

Thanks for the response. I have done what told me to. But it only brought the text inside the box. Still can't use other options.

Can we have a screenshot showing the toolbar when Text tool is active? Or maybe a full screen shot. Your image looks like normal from what I see.
