New forum member here, been using Inkscape about a year.
Tonight I'm seeing some really strange behavior with text. I'm building a table for an engineering wall chart, adding fraction to decimal values in a table format using guides to align things. Some of the decimal values go out six digits, and a few of those combinations cause the text box to suddenly expand to 3-4X its width and space out the trailing characters.
So far, it's only when I type a 6 (and sometimes an 8) in the third digit position. If I replace that character with another number, such as 4 in the screenshot below, it behaves like it should.
Any ideas what's happening?
Thanks, Tom Inkscape Version 0.92.3 (2405546, 2018-03-11)
Here's the .svg file with everything but the decimal conversion table removed. The blue highlighted entries are the ones jumping around when the correct decimal value is entered.
Example: 19/64" should be 0.296875". The text jumps as soon as you enter the third digit as a 6. Entering another number such as 4 does not cause the problem.
Hi Tom, i think in first, you must initialize inkscape. So you must delete inkscape preferences.xml You can find this file, if you press (Ctrl+Shit+P), you open inkscape preferences > system > (system info) user preferences Perhaps this solution will resolve your problem :) Bye Imppao
I have deleted 0.92.3 and installed 0.92.4. Unfortunately, no change to the jumping text behavior.
I did, however, verify that the issue seems to be related to the font I chose for the number values called Baskerville Bold. I've had this font for some time and don't recall now where it came from--I normally buy from MyFonts.com but don't see a record for this one. I like the font for this project but if I can't figure out the formatting issue I will most likely find a similar font rather than converting the text to paths and placing individual numbers.
I just downloaded something called Baskerville Bold (from fontsgeek), but it doesn't show up in Inkscape. Another oddity, when I open your file, it identifies the font as Baskerville Bold Thin. And it does look very thin, and not like in your screenshot. So I have not been able to get the right font for testing However, my theory was the font was the problem.
Hhmm.... I seem to also have a regular Baskerville font, without the bold (from Windows 7). And if I change your font to that, it looks bold! All very strange! But anyway, when I do that, the 6 fits into the 19/64 field just fine.

Imppao,
I deleted the .xml file as you suggested and restarted Inkscape. No change in the text jumping behavior. :(
Hi Tom,
what is your inkscape version ?
are you testing with another inkscape version ?
I'm using Inkscape Version 0.92.3 (2405546, 2018-03-11).
If there's a later version, I have not installed it.
ok Tom
i think is a good idea to install and test inkscape 0.92.4

Hi
so the problem is solved :)
Bye and happy new year
Thanks so much for the help all! I'm going to call this one closed to poor quality font choice and move on.
