Beginners' Questions Suddenly slow to the point of being unusable

Hi there, I've been happily using Inkscape for some years now, and generally have had very few issues, whatsoever.

Starting yesterday, for some unknown reason, the program has become so slow, it had practically become unusable. I've tried uninstalling my current version, installing the latest version (which also has the same issue), uninstalling that, and going back to 0.92.3 64bit. This version appears to be marginally better, but still far laggier than I've ever known.

Attempting to Resize Page To Content takes about 30 seconds for a file around 600 x 200, 72dpi.

PC is relatively new and certainly powerful enough for my needs. Other programmes, including Jasc PSP are still working absolutely as expected. Any ideas, please? Grateful for any advice.

Please reset the preferences, relaunch, then test.

If the issue persists, please share the user preferences.xml file ( rename to preferences.txt) and an Inkscape svg containing a rectangle and ellipse.

Apologies for the late reply. Problem still persists, sadly. Have attached preferences.txt and will post the svg as requested. Cheers,

    Rectangle Ellipse svg attached.

I see the svg document is the latest version of Inkscape. The preferences file does not match the default, tho. Could you reset the preferences in System (big button) and share the renamed file?

    Done. New file attached.

Not much difference, but might be worth trying my file. (attached)

I'd still also try moving the entire user configuration directory somewhere else and restarting Inkscape. Inkscape will recreate the directory.

If that works... If you have custom file for patterns, symbols, templates etc., you can add them back from the old directory piecemeal to ensure performance is maintained.

Thank you again, I shall give that a go. May I ask which folders/files should I move for the user config directory, please?

The entire directory "inkscape" at the path indicated in Preferences>System, "user config". I'd move it to the desktop, or such.

No change, sadly. Tried copying an image into Inkscape as usual, then selected Document Properties in mind to Resize To Content. Took over 2 minutes just for the Document Properties window to appear, during which Inkscape had a (Not Responding) message in Windows. No idea why this is happening. Never happened before, and doesn't seem to be happening with any other software. Document Properties remains unresponsive after roughly five mins. Inkscape doesn't have an icon in taskbar even. Just a blank square.

Ugh. If it's a windoze machine, I'd uninstall, delete the user config directory and reinstall using the 64 bit .msi installer.

Feel free to post your system info.

I don't use Windows, but I have read that the upgrade to 1.2.1 has improved performance for Windows users, as there were problems with 1.2.ย https://twitter.com/adambelis/status/1547908557487554560

There are a few issues on the tracker related to performance... some have workarounds to try:ย https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inbox/-/issues?label_name=performance

I don't know if it will be important to your problem, but I thought you should see it.ย ย https://twitter.com/inkscape/status/1549798243554533376

Okay, I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the latest build, but still the same slow performance. Aside from the inconvenience of losing Inkscape, I remain curious how no other software seems to be affected in the same way. Something within the past few weeks or so has drastically changed how Inkscape alone runs on my system. Virus scans are clear. Using an Asus laptop, 16gb 2400MHz DDR4 RAM, 4 core 2.1Ghz CPU. Win 11 Home. Currently trying Inkscape 1.0.2 - marginally better, but not enough to be considered usable in a practical sense.

    Well, that's a bummer.ย

I presume it happens all the time, not just with imported images.

    Any new fonts?

I know there have been two windows updates this month, so who knows what that might bring to the table.
