I'm having a problem with creating a "square object". The tool seems to draw a square but it is only in the form of a dotted box with the appropriate handles.
It does not auto fill with either a block colour or a stroke ( the tutorial says that it is automatically filled blue and with a stroke in black). Using the "stroke and fill" attribute box doesn't allow me to set this in anyway. The circle tool however works perfectly. Puzzled - I'm sure I've used it before.
Please advise. What is wrong?
Note I was using an earlier version 9.****, when this showed up. I have since installed the latest version - which behaves the same.

Try Preferences->Reset Preferences and restart Inkscape and see if this helps already.
