Beginners' Questions Simple PDF text edit

    hello there,

running inkscape 1.3.2 now, just updated.

Like many other people, i need to EDIT PDF text sometimes, fix invoices, etc - now, in a previous release, i don't remember the number, this was really easy. You could select the text, get a little yellow dot, then expand the text box (cant explain any better), then take the TEXT tool and add or remove letters - now for the life of me i cannot do it anymore.

When you select existing text it looks like this, always:

From my Dropbox (just a photo!) -> https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/5xjue363gd6mvtt4csg74/Screenshot-2023-12-08-125316.png?rlkey=1szpn49uv3gsy5w3qja3jhei8&dl=0

You can of course do some surgical work, click on letters, select say the letter A then remove it, then remove a space, which is still GREAT but it used to be much simpler editing text.

I tried to click on Text -> Conver to TEXT but doesn't do anything, etc opening the Text and Font box, then there's the TEXT box but there isn't anything there, because it's not text :)

Perhaps i am missing some links or this is over complicated, it should be easy to do, probably in my opinion the single most useful feature for me to use inkscape.

Just frustrated i cannot do this simple operation the way it used to

Does anyone know if it's possible to use the TEXT tool to edit an existing TEXT in PDF as it used to be possible in a previous release?

    many thanks,
    Gabrio

Make sure that you use [PDF Import Settings > Internal Import] and not [ > Cairo Import]. Inkscape tries to match pdf fonts to those installed on your system to generate identical svg text objects. If the pdf fonts are not found then you need to use [Fonts: Substitute missing fonts]. This will change the text appearance but it is editable. You can then select a font style and size that's close to the original.

Selecting [Cairo Import] or [Fonts: Draw missing fonts] changes text into paths. This looks perfect but these are shapes with no text data.

It's also possible that your pdf has no text data to begin with. Since this is a new occurrence, maybe there was a change in the software that generated these files.

YES!!! Thank you, this drove me nuts for a while now.

what makes the difference is the [Fonts: Substitute missing fonts] and not "draw missing fonts" which was enabled by default. - i was already using the "internal import" . it works!

with one little caveat, it does NOT work on every single PDF, but the majority 3 worked fine, just one still the same with the "path" even with  [Fonts: Substitute missing fonts] selected.

    thank you!

Do you know if you can make Substitute missing fonts enabled by default?
