Mmmh - the handle length+direction will describe the curvature. If you´re just got distracted by it you can disable them from be rendered completely - not sure this helps though. No idea how shortened handles and keeping shape should work. Just compared with another SVG app and the handles are of identical length:

Im using it to create topographical maps for lasercutting.
Sometimes im using the trace bitmap tool and other times im handtracing with the pen tool.
Now the problem:
Either way the path needs to be manualy tweeked. And the handles for every node is way to long.
Is there a shortcut to trim the handles, usually it works best with the handles pulled almost all the way in to the node.
