Beginners' Questions Select path under or behind.

    Hello all ...

I'm having some issues with selecting behind.

Here is what is happening and what is not.

I have a square overlaying a circle, both are paths.

According to Inkscape Help, I should be able to select the circle behind with Alt + LClick.

Nothing happens when I LClick, but when I release the Alt key, I end up getting the Measure tool.

Now, I use keyboard shortcuts quite a bit and have a number of tools set up to my own liking.

I have looked to see if I accidentally set the measure tool to Alt.  It is set to M

So, it is a puzzle to me why.

Is there a config or xml file somewhere where all the shortcuts are listed.  It would be easier to spot any error if I could see that.

Are there other ways to select behind?

    Thanks for listening.

I cannot find any documentation or Help on Modifiers.

    Suggestions?

    Thanks

    Hi UM22.04 Inkscape 1.2 (1:1.2.1+202207142221+cd75a1ee6d)

To test draw a rectangle fill blue then duplicate and choose fill red (not critical). You will have two rectangles on top of each other.

Now click on rectangle and note fill in status bar, press Alt and click again and note fill changed to other color.

On my system the move symbol with the four arrows wants to move the wrong rectangle. Have found once the other object is shown

in status bar just use arrow key to move the correct object or you can enter a number in top x y selection.

Not sure if same in Windows.

Also seems if under object is smaller I have to hold Alt down and keep clicking till sometimes correct object shows in status bar or

can sweep select the smaller object and move with arrow keys or direct number entry, mouse moves wrong item. You can try by adding

a third small object to the test rectangles. Key is checking status bar.

Thanks for getting back with me.

I have tried what you talked about.

ALTand LCLICK do not select anything and the second I let go of the Alt, it goes directly to the Measure tool.

I must had got something messed up in the keyboard shortcut file.

    I might consider reinstalling Inkscape.

I found the Inkscape.xml file, and and will continue to look at it. This is the Default.xml file for keyboard shortcuts.

Next install, I'll back that file up before making keyboard shortcuts.

I wish I could find some documentation on Modifiers in keyboard shortcuts.  The ALT key is one of the modifiers.

I wonder if my problem with going to Measure tool is in there somehow.

Anyway, thanks for trying and I'll keep at it.

    Any questions?

    Bob

You can export your current KB shortcut file and try the reset button in the preferences>Interface>keyboard.

Oh, reset?  That will reset the whole file?

    I'll give it a try

    Still does the same thing.

Does not select anything and when I release ALT, I get the Measure tool.

    Ugh!!!

Please share your user keys file (default.xml), from users/yourusername/appdata/roaming/inkscape/keys

The roaming file only has this ...

    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

    <keys name="User Shortcuts"/>

    I was/am looking at ProgramFiles    C:\Program Files\Inkscape\share\inkscape\keys\macromedia-freehand-mx.xml

    I'd try this:

Copy Inkscape.xml from the /share/inkscape/keys/ directory to the appdata/roaming/inkscape/keys directory, then rename it (in the roaming directory, AKA user profile) to default.xml.

Then restart Inkscape. Any modifications to the user profile default.xml file will be persistent if Inkscape is re-installed.

OK,  I'll get back to this later.

Persistent, even if you drill down and get all directories.  Probably hidden ones you can't find!

    I'll see what happens ...

    Thanks ...

    Hi @TylerDurden

Would Preferences / System / User keys: / Open work for OP on Windows? (not sure if it would show hidden)

    Yes.

Well, I think I figured out my problem.

I run Macro Express Pro on the computer.

I went and disabled the macros that had ALT and LCLICK.

Problem went away.  I'll have to check others now.

I can now click on objects that are behind and don't end up with the Measure tool.

How does one apologize on the forum for silly mistakes?

I appreciate you guys time and efforts to help me.

Hoping I can pass the favor on to someone someday on the forum.

    Quick question ...

Where can I find out anything on Modifiers on the keyboard shortcut panel in Preferences.

    Thanks again.

    Bob

Ah... keyboard macros... I'll have to add that to the list of things to disclose.

    Thanks for mentioning it.

You've heard of this problem before?!!!

    Thanks again ...

I have not, but the first topic in the forum enumerates the kind of information to share when requesting help. Keyboard macros should not be overlooked.
