Beginners' Questions "SAVE" png location not remembered when Exporting

I've created a couple of drawing objects (red square, blue triangle), and now want to Export them (collectively) to a specific location as Foo.png. So I highlight both, use Export as, go to the destination I want the png to be saved to, give it a name Foo.png, click Save;Ā Ok.. done. The image Foo.pngĀ is saved to the location I want.Ā  ThenĀ if I make a changes to the red square or blue triangle, andĀ resave it, Inkscape "Remembers" the path for foo.png and where it was savedĀ and re-saves Foo.png... so far so good.

I then create another drawing (Green circle) and I reuse red square from Foo.png . (I use clone or copy to get red square duplicated from Foo.png to use in my new image with green circle). So now that I've created a new drawing (green circle, red square) use Export as and goĀ to another location that this needs to be saved to, and SAVE it as Foo2.png -- and Foo2.png is saved with the name and at the new location I wanted. Great!

The problem is that if I want to resave the second drawing (making some change to green circle, red square; Foo2.png), then the EXPORT As Filename dialog contains the path to Foo.png NOT Foo2.png as I expect. this may be because I reused red square from Foo to create Foo2?? But shouldn't that not matter since I've taken green circle red square and EXPORTED AS...Ā  and SAVED as Foo2.png to a another differentĀ location??.

How to I get InkscapeĀ to rememberĀ the path and file name of a *.png that I am exporting??Ā

Ā Am I missing a step or a preference setting somewhere -- combed through it to try to find anything like that, no luck.

I'm very confused as the exactly what's going on. But I can at least tell you what Inkscape thinks it's doing.

When you export an object as a PNG file, Inkscape will save the location it was exported to on the object. If that object is copied, even to a new document, it's export location is copied too. Although exporting it to a new location should fix it to it's new location so I'm not sure what's going on there.

Martin, I'm as confused as you are... What you describe is what I also think should happen.

I have several Inkscape projects/svg's... some have no problems and work as you describe, but 1 svgĀ in particularĀ simply won't' remember the last-saved png name and in some instances (in the same svg) it refuses to change the path to a new location. So if I create a couple of objects (see above) and highlight them all and export it as foo.png to the location c\iocons\today\foo.png , it will correctly save foo.png to c:\icons\today, but, if I immediately highlight the same group, and try to re-export exactly what I just exported, it remembersĀ the path c\iocons\today\,Ā  Ā but not the foog.png file name I just gave it, instead saying something like text235734.png.Ā  Further If I change the path and try to save foo to c\images\tomorrow then it will save the file there, but re exporting that same grouping, the export reverts the location back to c:\icons\today and appendsĀ some-random-text+number name for foo.png.Ā Ā What's happening here?
