Is there a way to save the Docked items as in a sense a custom toolbar. Sorry for what is probably a stupid question, I am a complete newbee................
I do that but when I close the application and restart, there are no icons in the dock. Is there not a way to dock a handful of icons and then save them so that every time you start Inkscape that the dock contains these icons.Β ThanksΒ
There is a similar config where the docks can be "tabbed" on the right, so they are handy. I have saved a template called "Docks" and saved it with the checkbox ticked. It works in conjunction with preferences settings to save window geometry with the document.

You can "iconify" docking dialogs to the side, using the little arrow by the x in the upper right.
If you would like something different, please describe in greater detail.

This config also has a small bug where they are not seen at launch, but appear when the window is resized.Β https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape/-/issues/1917
