Beginners' Questions Redock the Layers window

I am playing around with the Layers window.  I noticed that I often open files, new and old ones, and that the Layers window is not showing on the right.  So I bring it up by going to Layer > Layers and it docks to the right edge of the main window.  I would prefer if it was set to always show the Layers window.  Is there an option to turn that on?

But in experimenting I've undocked the Layers window so that it is floating.  I can't figure out to redock the window.  I've tried redragging it back to the edge but it doesn't snap back into place.

After changing back to "dockable" grab it by its header and drag it back to the tabs:

Thanks.  After reading and watching your explanation carefully I got it working.  You do have to have another tab displayed, like Transform open so that you have a place to drag the Layers header to.  So I opened Transform.  Dragged the layers in place.  Closed (X'd) the Transform tab and now I have the Layers tab open.  And it seems that it is set now to always open with the Layers tab showing. Which was going to be my next question.  How do I set up Inkscape to always open with a layers tab?

Polygon, another side question: what program do you use to make the short animated gif?  I'm using Linux Mint.  Is it a linux program?

Oh, and just for the record, I am using

I believe that´s the same answer as for all adjusted things: Go File->"Save Document as Template"->Check "Set as default template" - close and restart Inkscape and see if this works for you (I´m on macOS).

I had some issues with the newest version crashing repeatedly when I was dragging the toolbar back to the right side of the Align and Distribute tab as shown above. I was getting repeated crashes.
I was only successful after dragging the objects tab to the LEFT side which pushed the align and distribute over to the right.
