I am complete newbie with Inkscape and also here. I want to make a thin line rectangle round some text for some signs I will have gravured. In MS Paint you just choose Rectangle and there it is. I can not figure out how to do that in Inkscape, all rectangles get filled etc. Can someone tell me?
After I click on the Rectangle tool, I can click and drag on the canvas to draw a rectangle.
After I draw a rectangle, I can decide if I do/don't want it filled, or do/don't want the outline stroke filled by selecting colors down in the lower-left corner:
Clicking on one of the colors will change the fill color of the rectangle I just drew. Clicking on the "X" will turn off the fill completely. Shift+click does the same thing, except it operates on the stroke.
Even more control can be found by calling up the Fill and Stoke dialog, found in Object->Fill and Stroke...

I'd go through the simple tutorials in the Inkscape Help menu, then chime back if you have more questions.
