I did a quick search, but I couldn't find anything specific to Inkscape 1.0. I'm using it on a laptop with a fairly low res screen ofย by 1366 x 768 under Elementary Linux.
1.0 rearranged the tools, and now the magnifying glass I use constantly is hidden behind the >> which for some reason is not visible with the Pallette open.
Is there a way to rearrange the icons, or maybe even change the vertical tool bar to Horizontal. Maybe make it take 2 columns so I can see everything.
That said, I'd suggest learning a few keyboard shortcuts and other ways to zoom. If you can, use a mouse with a scroll wheel - Ctrl+wheel is usually easier than switching back and forth between tools. If you do want to use the zoom tool, you can switch to it by pressing F3 or Z.

You can rearrange them, but it requires working with XML files, there's no UI for doing it at the moment:
