Beginners' Questions Outlining a dotted line

Is it possible to draw a bezier, format the stroke that it becomes a dotted line through "fill and stroke" -> "stroke style", and then give each of these dots an outline, without turning them into separate objects but instead keeping it as a bezier?

"Pattern along Path" and "Scatter" comes to mind:

Thanks, but that's not what I am looking for. As I said: stroke - stroke style, then chose a dotted line. Then give that line an outline.

Sorry that I didn't reply for nearly a week! VERY busy here! :D

No. I mean: go to "object", then "fill and stroke", then "stroke style". There you can chose the popup list "Dashes". Pick one of the dotted or dashed lines there, doesn't really matter which, and draw a bezier. Then give that an outline, without turning the dashes or dots into separate entities.

I realise very well that those dashes are strokes and not shapes.
I just wonder if there is a way to still give them an outline, even though they are all strokes. So kind of "treat" them as if they were objects, but still keep them as dashed or dotted lines.

    How about a filter?

That's really going the right direction, thanks!
How do I do it so the outline only goes outwards, and doesn't overlap the original stroke?

I tried to create a nice example of three things:
    1. the dashed line without outline.
    2. the dashed line with your suggestion.
    3. the outline how it should be. (I faked it here, by putting a bigger stroke underneath. This is NOT a solution, though.)

But when I did what you suggested, so option 2, this is what I get... I've tried to tweak all the settings of the filter, but nothing good really happens.
(I put the strokes on a dark grey rectangle, in order to make sure the stroke - for whatever reason - wouldn't just turn white, even though I've set the RGB value to black.)

I´m under the impression that Tyler´s solution simply work:

Achim Steigert,  I'd try making the line longer and wider stroke.
