I apologize in advance that this is probably going to sound dumb. Especially because I don't know the right words for everything (I had to google "Inkscape outline box" to find the term "bounding box", for example). Please bear with me while I ineptly try to describe what's going on.
Β
So I have these six images from a website that I'm trying to work into an Inkscape project. Pictures A, B, and C are mostly behaving. Pictures D, E, and F are not, even though I thought I'd been doing the same thing for all of them.
I tried cropping the pictures by putting shapes on top of them and using Path: Difference to chop off the parts I didn't want. And it mostly made unwanted bits invisible. But the image ended up with some weird nodes to it
and the outline wasn't... outlining right
Also the top keeps getting cut off, but when I try to adjust the Weird Nodes it either makes the bounding box so big it gets in the way of the other images, or it reveals the "invisible" bits, or it cuts off parts of the picture from the other side.
Β
Anyway, I need the proper outline a lot here, and I've so far been limping along on inconvenient workarounds. But I've reached the point where I'm just really stuck. All I want to do is get it behave normally.
Like I said, images A-C are outlined normally, and I don't even know what I did differently.
hopefully that's uploaded right, it seems Inkscape default-saves files on a part of my computer that I can't access with the "upload" function here, so I had to Save As.
On bottom of reply box click on the paperclip then on the UPLOAD FILE button then navigate to your file and click on open. This will upload your file to forum.
Edit:
Was responding to OP's "hopefully that's uploaded right, it seems Inkscape default-saves files on a part of my computer that I can't access with the "upload" function here" and glossed over the file permission portion. Also the fact that OP already uploaded other files.
When I look up where the actual Inkscape files are saved, it's under [Username]. But when I browse under "attach files" in my OP, there's no [Username] folder. When I just type in "FamiliarFaceswip.svg", it tells me that's not a valid file name even though it's open on my computer right now.
I am, you may have gathered, not very good at figuring out computers.
You didn't say your Operating System / Inkscape version but think it is Windows. Not running Windows but as I remember you have to navigate to something similar like
Computer / Local Disk / Users / Your User Name / Desktop / Your Filename.
There's a bar for Upload File and when I open it up I get this:
Also I think part of the problem is that anything I try to Save As gets saved as a Microsoft Edge file, even though it's .svg. I don't know why it does that.
You can change the file association to open your svg files with Inkscape here or may have to search for Windows file associations based on version you have.
If that was really what I was supposed to do-- and I have been doing it, incessantly, to no effect-- then it seems what I have is a real glitch and not just a "haha silly Sasha, you just don't know the right buttons to press".
I think I'm going to let this lie for now. I found another workaround that got me over the latest hump, I think when I'm done I'm just going to download the latest version of Inkscape and see if that makes things behave better.
Thank you for trying to work with me even though I'm a computer dummy.

Please provide an example Inkscape file that has the issue.

Hmmmm... I don't think that's the correct image.
Images can be saved at the directory of your choosing... maybe in this case, try the desktop.
It's the same when I save it to my desktop.

Wondering how you attached the files in post 1.
There's a bar for Upload File and when I open it up I get this:
Also I think part of the problem is that anything I try to Save As gets saved as a Microsoft Edge file, even though it's .svg. I don't know why it does that.
Not a problem. SVG files are web browsers files, so unless you set Inkscape as the default program, they will be associated with the default browser.
Then I don't know why it's not working when I upload it.
OK are you saying you press the blue upload file on the forum and the window in post 8 pops up?
See my attached image. Did you press the down arrow (red arrow pointing to it) to scroll to see if they are possibly there?
Might be helpful for you if you go here at step 2 to show file extensions, if you don't like them showing you can just uncheck.
Disregard below step two as just showing common Microsoft extensions. With it checked your files will be like Test.svg and not just Test

Could you maybe take a screenshot of in Inkscape of the window that pops up when you click on File / Save As?
[accidental doublepost]
I think File Explorer found it. Now I'm getting the message that the file is too big to upload, so it's still not working, but I think it's progress!
Yeah, it's just a couple of irrelevant desktop files
--
Also, back to the OP! I think I may have turned the images into patterns, and I can't seem to un-pattern them.
Β
The File Save window looks correct.
To un-pattern: Objects>Pattern>Pattern to Objects.
You'd think that would work, wouldn't you?
If that was really what I was supposed to do-- and I have been doing it, incessantly, to no effect-- then it seems what I have is a real glitch and not just a "haha silly Sasha, you just don't know the right buttons to press".
When you save FamiliarFacewip.svg to the desktop, isΒ there a file you can share?Β
Copy and paste does not work in the reply area, but you can drag from windows explorer into the reply area, or use the paperclip button.
Other options are to use Google drive, dropbox or other file sharing services.
