    Hi,

just another stupid newbie question from another newbie, but i have to ask because I have spent days watching tutorial videos and no one mentions this. How do you get the guide or guideline to Align to your object? In this case I am using a square and i want 4 guides, aligned to each of the outer edges or faces of the square so that I can use the guides to align circles to my desired locations.

Thanks for the assistance in advance.

No worries... we all start at the beginning.

First, I'd set this in my preferences: Keep objects...

Then you can use this for almost any shape, but rectangles are most straightforward, Objects to guides:

Note that this will set the guides to the rectangle's paths, not its strokes.

I thank you Tyler for you input and assistance.

In Illustrator this was very very easy and straight forward.

basically I am trying to align 4 circles by there centre point to the 4 corners of a square, I am trying to create a laser/CNC cut file for a friend and learn this in the process. It has to be precise. I would much rather support and swap over to Inkscape rather than Adobe.

thanks again Tyler, I will try it right now.

I use Inkscape regularly for precision work. More CAD-like constraint tools are evolving, but for now it requires guides and snapping, like most illustration programs.

And If you have access to CAD, Inkscape can import/export DXF files

No guides needed to snap to corners... Snap to nodes, snap to centers active will do it.

great video Tyler but you went too fast or steps are missing. I am not familiar enough with it yet. Your gonna have to explain it like you are explaining to a little kid, sorry.

    1. don't have any center points in my circle to snap to, not that snap is working all that well.

    2. you got to a menu, I don't know how to get there.

    3. It is like my guides are on a different layer or something, very weird.

    2. will just pop up when thereΒ΄s not enough space to show all snapping options at once: a button with a right arrow will appear.

Sorry for the pace of the gif... I keep em short, fast & small to minimize filesize.

Every Inkscape object has a midpoint/center and a movable rotation center.

By setting the snapping controls to snap to centers and corner nodes, alignment to the corners is precise.

The square and circle are scaled with precision using the controls bar above the top ruler (default view).

This is one of a number of ways to attain the goal.
