Beginners' Questions My Settings Are Not Being Saved

    Hello,

Ever since I had Inkscape, I would open Inkscape to see this:

"The preferences file C: \Users\Me\AppData\Roaming\inkscape\preferences.xml is not a valid XML document. Inkscape will run with default settings, and new setting will not be saved."

I would have a choice of "OK" and -Ā Oh yeah, I would only have the choice of "OK",Ā which means I wouldĀ just have to accept it! What actually happensĀ is that what I just quotedĀ comes up, then I press "OK". After that, Inkscape opens, but whatever settings I set in the preferences, areĀ not saved. Thus,Ā every timeĀ I wouldĀ load upĀ Inkscape, I would have to set everything to my likingĀ and then when I would close Inkscape, everything I've set, is not saved. It's really annoying to have to set everything up again, so I'm asking for help toĀ fixĀ this issue. I have tried toĀ reinstall it, but that didn't work. I really don't know how to fix this problem. I don't know what it means for a file to not be a valid XML document.

I would really appreciate anyĀ assistanceĀ inĀ solvingĀ this problem.

I love InkscapeĀ as an open source, free to use,Ā vector graphics editor. It just needs to be worked on a bit more.

    Thank you!

Not sure if this is related to other issues when only deleting the XML file and restart Inkscape will solve the problem - while it generates a fresh one. You can keep your former version by renaming it.

    Hello Pixel Pest,

I followed your instructions toĀ deleteĀ the file and letĀ Inkscape generate a new one. What happened after that was the beginning of the end of this conversation, in that itĀ madeĀ me thankful forĀ you help.Ā It worked! The message no longerĀ came up when I opened Inkscape and my settings were saved! It was quick and easy to fix, yet I wouldn't have been able to doĀ it without your advice. I think it's your magic plunger that did the job. Where did you get that plunger, because I want it?!

I'm really happy that you solved this issue!

    Thank you, Pixel Pest!

I have the same problem, but I don't exactly understand, how to do it. Could you clarify it?

Alas, the fix of deleting the prefs file; fixes it once. But as soon as you switch off and start again another time; it needs to be done again.

In fact i have to do it every time run ink-scape!

But i didn't six months ago?

I am on a windows 10 PC and running he current version of win10 pro.

Depending on how Inkscape was installed (.exe/.msi/zip), it's possible win permissions are not allowing the user preference file to be written on close.

I'd ensure the username/appData/roaming/Inkscape/templates directory can be written to.

Thanks for the info Tyler, however the folder is being written to; as ink-scape is saving a new prefs file there. But this file is not one containing any altered settings info, only the basics.

Even when i have opened it and deleted the existing file.

Set the interface to have open the items i want and to the theme and language i want.

Next opening, it creates a new prefs file in that folder; but opens back at basics.

Ok, I'd also ensure theĀ preferences file C: \Users\username\AppData\Roaming\inkscape\preferences.xml is being re-written each time Inkscape is closed.

I too have been having this issue since installing 1.1. Doing the above does not seem possible, in fact the app data file was hidden and located elsewhere, so I moved it, still no difference. It did say xml doc was opened by unknown app, so I changed it to an xml opening app. still nada. I re-installed, getting very annoying...I just might go back to previous versio at this rate. I am using a laptop with Win 10. would appreciate any further insight, thank you. P.S I am a long time user since way back. not the most clever one I am sure, I still find things to learn lol

@gnu61,Ā  any chance you are installing from the Windows store? There is a bug report that may be related:Ā https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inbox/-/issues/1526

The preferences file is stored in the same location for all versions except for the 32-bit PortableApps.com Format (InkscapePortable.exe).

The full path is listed in Inkscape Preferences - System in front of the Reset Preferences button.

Tyler, Thank you, Yes THIS time I did use the microsoft file download, but previous 3 times or so, the direct .exe file.

Aero, thank you that's very helpful, I will have a go at that.
